Congratz Iceland on the bronze medal

European handball championship, 3rd place, well done!

Colors

Ok, today Reykjavik might not be able to compete with the snow in Copenhagen, but we can compete on color :)
Basically 2 min. walk from my new apartment all these colorful places are situated. good thing that Reykjavikans take to the color palette once in a while, because today it is really really grey!

Snow in Denmark

My husband just send me these shots from Copenhagen, he is eating breakfast and looking out side:

Park next to the Danish apartment:

The park and the hospital:

Right outside the beedroom window:

..and the super cozy path to the baker:

Stable internet is a wonderful thing

I am currently listening to my usual Sunday morning show Iben's Harem on Danish radio 3 :).
It's great lo listen to it again. The normal Sunday routine back in Copenhagen, was for me and my husband to buy fresh bread from the baker, then spend a lazy Sunday morning reading the newspaper, listening to radio and me multi-boxing some WOW.

Before I left for Reykjavik we thought that given the fact that Danish Radio is available as net radio, we could till listen to the same show, albeit from different locations. So yes finally my internet is good enough for that to happen.

Today I will have to get cracking on all the laundry that has piled up, but it is fine with me, I have a lot of emailing to do anyway.

The fridge here is not compatible with fridge magnets so to speak, so "my Danish kids" will have to be somewhere else this time, just between the porcelain dragon and the whiskey:

They are from left to right: Julie my niece, Martin my "sister's" boy, Emilie my "sister's" daughter, Simon my nephew:

My Icelandic Crib.

Just a few shors, I still have boxes in some of the rooms, bed is not done either...still washing...
But the living room is pretty cool.

Check out the lamp:

It can make some really funky patterns on the walls:

and reflections too:

and this is my new computer corner:

Now I just need a cool chair.

Unpacked.

I'm writing from my new crib.

The internet , thank god, has not been turned off yet. So I am not totally disconnected.

The move went well, the sun was shining and a lovely CCP'er gracefully lend her services as chauffeur. So here I am at Grettisgata for the next 3 months at least. Right in the hearth of party Reykjavik I am told, this will be great.

The flat is great an I will upload pictures soon....but...there is still a bit of washing to do and I am getting a bit tired.

Also managed to do the shopping so tomorrow there will be bacon, eggs and freshly brewed coffee.

Packing and cleaning.

No tonight wasn't to be a Poker night after all.
I just looked around the flat when I came back from work to change and thought, hmmm better get started on packing some of this.
Besides, drinks and Poker, I just don't trust myself to go home in time to get a good night's sleep :)

Unfortunately I was out a bit late with ordering internet so internetless weekend approaching ! shivers*
I can sort of vaguely remember the world before WWW, it is amazing how dependent..addicted :D I have become. It feels wrong to be disconnected, it is like, hey where is the real world?

Alan, my old MBA classmate just uploaded some very nice pictures to Facebook, from our leadership "stimulator" to Sweden when doing to MBA last year.
It seems like a lifetime ago...
It is both good an bad,
I miss my classmates and the unique bond we had, I don't think, that I will experience anything like this again.
On the other hand I am bursting with energy, I want to dive full on into game development with my new knowledge and make a difference.

My old blog about my MBA experience is here:
http://aunlocked.blogspot.com/
even though it doesn't really pay enough respect to our camaraderie, it is very focused on the curriculum.

Spam CCP,...you are never bored.

Damn but CCP spam is a treasure trove of oddities.
Ice cream flavors that never should have been....

Either that or some emails seem more amusing when you come home from the pub....

....that being said, wasabi ice cream does sound pretty good actually....

CCP Fishtank

Some pictures of the massive! saltwater fish tank situated at the 3rd floor of the CCP HQ.
It is a self sustained environment as far as I have been told.

One side points out towards the recreational area, the other towards the offices situated on the 3rd floor.

Release Planning over yes!

2 days of intense Release Planning at CCP are over.
It was tough, as well as the days running up to the event, but...
very rewarding.

The process is pretty awesome, actually I like it. :)

Because at CCP we rock!

Now I can focus on life outside work again:
  • 4 days until I move, and I have to sort out internet, yeehaaa, and pack and wash and....
  • 3 days until the Poker tournament at CCP, do I have time to participate as a player.... then I have to hit the dry cleaner for sure...probably need to anyways, because I want to wear my suit.

What's hot and what's not, food.

HOT!!!!!
Lakkris Dúndur Bitar.
Bitesize likorice chunks covered in chocolate, yummy!

NOT.....
Malt extract. A bit like nisseøl in Denmark, but not quite.
Can't really get the hang of this one.

Haiti

Even though Iceland is hit hard financially, Icelanders have been more than ready to send money to the victims in Haiti.

It really makes you think about the intentional community's behavior towards Iceland in respect to the Icesave and IMF situation. How a lot of those countries, that shout for payment now, come across like petty and small. Talk about kicking someone, who is already lying down.

Moving at CCP and more

Moving at CCP.
Well well well, we moved today at CCP. Basically the art department moved from our old offices at the 3rd floor, to the new office space in the building connected to the CCP HQ main building. We are also situated on the 3rd floor now but we now have windows all around and the light factor just went up by millions.
As moves go, this one was pretty ok, some trouble though with the floor in one of the offices, it is basically damaged from water and has to be fixed before our AD and Technical Lead can move in. Also we has not internets! But it will be fixed tomorrow.
all in all the new space in fantastic, I'll upload pictures once all the dust settles.

In the Dark.
Friday at around 2300, the power went poof! were I live, suddenly I was sitting there in total darkness in front of the PC going, uhm. I am really glad I got those tea lights and a lighter some weeks back.
When Ilooked out the streetlights were out too, as well as the light in some of the surrounding buildings, but not all of Reykjavik. I still haven't figures out what it was. But hey the light came back after an hour or so, so no big deal.

Week-end.
Was pretty uneventful as weekends go, but I had originally planned to move into an apartment, but since I decided on another bigger one, I am moving the 30th instead.
I have been sleeping a lot though, all of Saturday almost, I blame it on the daylight, the sun rises quite late and it makes you want to sleep in.

The economy.
Just thought I would post this link:

Yes, the Icelandic eceonomy is going in the right direction :)

Wednesday 13 January 2010

Almost 30 hours now

Everyone at CCP is absorbed by the events leading up to release planning this month. All teams are getting a feel for scope etc. Lots of meetings, thinking, planning, estimates etc.

Long day requires total chill out in the evening, so I went downtown to sample some Mexican food and grab a pint of lager. Now I am back home sipping some tea and considering what to play, Supreme Commander maybe?
I could really do with a great turn based game.

EVE is no 1

20 hours

Damn 2 days at work and almost 20 hours logged already.
But there is so much going on it is crazy. It is fun though.
But back to back meetings can be devastating.

I am moving out Saturday, into a bigger studio flat, which should include cable, internet, washing machine, dryer etc. It is situated close to the main shopping street about 15 mins walk from CCP.
There is also plenty of room for a bike, so it can certainly serve as a better hunting ground for a bigger place.

Monday 11 January 2010

Daily SPAM

New week.

Good start to a new week, long day though, 8:20ish to 18:20ish.
But hey after a Sunday were I really did nothing constructive at all, it was quite nice.
Looks like I could be moving to a bigger place too, still studio style, but bigger and with cable (including Danish channels which is quite good for news etc.)

But yes Sunday was extremely relaxing, I am almost at the end of Helliconia part 1 by Brian Aldiss, yes I haven't read it before, so bear with me :). Good read though.

Sunday 10 January 2010

Hvidbjørnen

I've figured out what the military looking vessel in the harbor is.
It is "Hvidbjørnen" a Danish inspection ship. It has just been on a mission aimed to stop illegal fishing south of Greenland.

Here is a shot from the web:

Icesave situation

Being in Reykjavik at the moment certainly gives me a unique vantage point to the debate going on in respect to the Icesave situation. It is a terribly unfair position that the Icelandic people face. Due to the irresponsible behavior of a few, an entire nation now has to face the consequences.

The SPAM mailing list at CCP is of course used to debate the issue these days, but it is not without the occasional humor. Here are 2 pictures from yesterday.

@ Work

At work, but not working right now.
I went here to go up and see the CCP, MP Bank chess tournament.

The CCP and MP bank Grandmaster Chess Tournament

On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Reykjavik Chess Club a very strong chess tournament will be held here at CCP, Saturday afternoon from 13 to 17.30. The event will take place in the dining area. Eight of the strongest Icelandic chess masters will fight it out in this 15 minutes per game, seven round-robin tournament. All games are shown live on the projection screen as well as broadcasted live on the internet.

Our fearless leader Hilmar Veigar Pétursson will play the first move of the tournament!

CCP warmly invite you to this special event!

The participants are:

* Arnar E. Gunnarsson (b. 1978), International Master
* Friðrik Ólafsson (b. 1935), International Grandmaster
* Guðmundur Kjartansson (b. 1988), International Master
* Helgi Áss Grétarsson (b. 1977), International Grandmaster
* Helgi Ólafsson (b. 1956), International Grandmaster
* Jóhann Hjartarson (b. 1963), International Grandmaster
* Jón L. Árnason (b. 1960), International Grandmaster
* Þröstur Þórhallsson (b. 1969), International Grandmaster

I am also installing WOW on my work machine since my internet is quite unstable at home. I have to get a wireless option next week..

D'oh! brought camera but it is out of power. So no flashy pictures of me with the pros.

EVE art

Check out this site:

for cool EVE inspired art, like this:

Weekend

Working late.
Shopping.
Eating out
Catching up with family and friends in Denmark.
Having a few beers while doing so.

Even though Reykjavik is so much further away from Denmark than London,
I still think, that when I moved to London in 1995, the distance was much bigger, simply due to the fact, the communicating with your home base, was way more expensive and consequently occurred less frequently. In 1995 had to rely on payphones, but now I have both mobile phones and PCs to provide me with, email, SMS, Skype, Messenger etc, and let us not forget about Facebook and Blogs.

All in all it just seems so different this time around, in a good way of course.
The world has indeed become smaller.

Wednesday 6 January 2010

Atjhuu

Wow it is already Wednesday, the week has gone so fast.

Sunday 3rd.
Flew home to Iceland, met a colleague from CCP in the Airport, which was cool, as it made the 3 hour flight more entertaining. Bought a Glenfiddich in the Airport and got a glass with it, which is great since all mine are back in Copenhagen.

Monday 4th.
Looked at a great apartment at Grettisgata, great but it is somewhat pricey.
On the way to the apartment I went on a small shopping spree, bought some candle holders for tealights, a notebook/organizer and found a copy of Harvard Business Review in the local magazine/book store "Eymundsson". I must say in respect to foreign magazines Reykjavik is pretty cool, you can buy a wide variety of them in the stores here.

Tuesday 5th.
I finally started to succumb to the cold that hit all my friends when I was in Denmark. finally got around to restock the fridge as well.

Wednesday 6th.
Yes that cold kicked totally in today. I am now on Paracetamol, alas no Kodimagnyl here on Iceland. Remind me to bring some when I go back next time, unless they are illegal of course.
I also managed to cut myself on the casing on my PC when turning it on, go figure....

Sunday 3 January 2010

A new year ahead.

I am flying back to Iceland in a few hours, after enjoying an excellent vacation in Copenhagen.
Thank you family and friends for making this such a wonderful time.

2010 is ahead and I am convinced this year is going to be full of adventure:
  • Being product owner on an exciting project at CCP.
  • Exploring Iceland's nature.
  • Getting to know a lot of cool new people.
  • Learning new things about SCRUM & Agile.
  • Whale watching.
  • Learning more about MMO development.
  • The Mexico trip in March with CCP.
  • Roskilde 2010.
I can't wait to get started to be honest.
